The style is believed to have originated in British pubs drinkers to order a mixture of dark beer and the bitter pill. The most common type of Black and fire in the United States use Guinness Draught not (Extra Stout) and low, with variations Harp Lager and Newcastle Brown Ale Bass instead of sometimes also known as Black and Tans. Guinness and Harp is more commonly known as half and half, and Guinness and Newcastle is generally called the Black Castle. The "layers" of Guinness on top of beer or beer is possible because relative density is less than the Guinness beer or beer.

To prepare a Black and Tan in the American style, first half way to fill a glass with beer, then add the Guinness Draught (In the can, bottle or tap). The top layer is best poured slowly over a spoon upside down placed on the glass to avoid splashing and mixing the layers. A specially designed black and tan spoon is bent in the middle so you can balance on the edge of Pt glass for easy emptying.
In the UK, another way to prepare a Black and Tan is to pour half a pint of dark beer in a glass of beer and then filled with bittersweet so that both beers are well mixed together.
In the Republic of Ireland a Black and Tan is typically half a pint of Smithwick topped with Guinness [citation needed]. This version also sometimes referred to as a "blacksmith" or "Light and bitter." During the summer months sturdy drinkers may request a black and fire, due to its light texture. Beer drinkers can also order a Smithwick's with a Guinness head. This is a pint of Smithwick operations with the last inch or covered Out with Guinness.
In Australia, specifically New South Wales, a Black and Tan is made from half a schooner (425ml) of Tooheys New (a pale lager) and then topped with Tooheys old (dark beer)
Variations
Half and Half: In Ireland, half traditional and half is half of warm temperature or Board of Guinness and half chilled Guinness. In the early days, refrigeration was of course, is not available. As refrigeration came into existence in the 20 th century, it was found that a mixture of the two temperatures created the perfect drink Guinness temperature. Most poured Guinness in Ireland is served around this temperature, plus or minus 44 degrees Fahrenheit (6 degrees Celsius).
