In 1915, he moved to Shanghai, where he earned a life outside work and private business. He traveled to Tokyo in 1917 to study art. When he returned to China, began teaching at Beijing University Art school at the invitation of Cai Yuanpei. After 1919, Xu studied abroad in Paris at the cole Suprieure of Fine Arts, where he studied oil painting and drawing. His travels around Western Europe allowed him to observe and imitate the techniques Western art. He returned to China in 1927 and, from 1927 to 1929, won a series of posts in institutions in China, including teaching at the National Central University (Now Nanjing University) in Nanjing, capital of the ancient city.
In 1933, Xu organized an exhibition of Chinese modern painting traveled to France, Germany, Belgium, Italy and the Soviet Union. During the Second World War, Xu traveled to Southeast Asia, holding exhibitions in Mexico and India. All proceeds of these exhibitions was the Chinese who suffered as a result of the war.

After the founding of the People's Republic of China 1949, Xu became president of the Central Academy of Fine Arts and president of the Chinese Artists Association.
Xu Beihong was a master of oils and ink. Most of his works, however, were in the traditional Chinese style. In its efforts to create a new national art form, which combines Chinese brush and ink with Western perspective and methods of composition. He integrated firm and bold brush movements with the precise delineation of form. As a teacher of art, advocated the subordination of the technique of artistic conception and emphasizes the importance of the artist's experiences in life. Of all the painters of the modern era, we can safely say that Xu is the painter most responsible for the direction taken in the world of modern Chinese art. Xu policies enacted by the principle of the communist era are controlling not only the official government policy towards the arts, but will continue to lead the overall direction taken in different schools Art and universities throughout China.
Xu received the massive support of art collectors in Asia. Between 1939 and 1941, he held solo exhibitions in Singapore, India and Malaysia, (Penang, Kuala Lumpur and Ipoh) to help raise funds for war relief efforts in China. In a war benefit show in March 1939, Xu held a group exhibition with Chinese ink painting masters Ren Bonian (Simplified Chinese:, Pinyin: Bnin Rn) and Qi Baishi (Simplified Chinese:, pinyin: Q Bish), and exhibited 171 works of art in the Victoria Memorial Hall.
Also met luminaries such as Rabindranath Tagore and Mahatma Gandhi during his stay in India, and has its sources of inspiration that led to the creation of iconic works such as the Tonto 4.21m throughout the Old Who Removed the Mountains of painting in the SAM program. After works of art as a poem of the Six Dynasties, Portrait of Mrs. Jenny and let the whip is also created during his stay in Southeast Asia. SAM director Kwok Kian Chow Xu mentioned the name tops the list in the Asian art modern realism, and its connections to various parts of Asia and Europe opened a new chapter in the historical narrative exchanges and influences of aesthetics and ideas in art.
Xu constantly pushed the boundaries of visual art with new techniques and international aesthetics, in an attempt to reinvent Chinese art. In fact, Xu's influence extends beyond China in the early 20. Singapore's many pioneering artists like Chen Wen Hsi, Lee Man Fong and Chen Chong Swee looked to him as a mentor and a worthy companion, sharing Xu defender to observe nature closely and inject realism in Chinese painting.
The Dancers of Malacca, one of the two vessels is believed to have been made in the 1940's, and given to the Huang brothers who were friends of Xu Beihong
Xu died of a stroke brain in 1953. After his death, Xu Beihong Museum was established in his home in Beijing.
Controversy
In 2008, two painted ceramic vases Chinese painter Xu Beihong entered the center of legal battle between the sponsor of the art exhibition titled blockbuster Xu Beihong in Nanyang in Singapore Art Museum and Friends Xu's family. In his affidavit, the descendants of art collectors at the end of Huang Shi Huang Meng Gui man - brothers who were good friends with Xu - had past vases and some of the pictures Mr. Jack Xu Bonn, an art dealer in Hong Kong in December 2006, was auctioned in the auction house Christie's in Hong Kong in May 2007. The 18cm tall vases were made in the 1940's, dancers, entitled Malaysia and orchid. These objects should be returned to their descendants, if the auction does not. In contrast, the glasses were exhibited in the Museum without prior approval of the original owners. Museum administration maintains that they were not aware the legal implications surrounding the artifacts during the preparation of the exhibition Xu Beihong. It was only after the end of the exhibition in July 2008 the Museum received notification of legal proceedings to recover Jack Bonn vases. Meanwhile, the museum acts as custodian for the vessels until the end of procedure. On March 12, 2009, the vases were duly returned to Singapore-based descendants of the brothers Huang.
