Changes in Nursing Uniforms Over the Years

The health care uniform is a symbol of knowledge. It represents the lmany hours studying anatomy or meds, the hours spent in clinical practice, the numerous nights spent cramming for tests. Symbolically, the knowledge learned is represented by the capping ceremony and graduation. The uniform worn by a nurse is their badge of knowledge. It is the physical representation of years of studying and work that went into achieving that precious nursing degree

Before the 19th century it fell to the nuns to care for the sick so it is no surprise that the nursing uniforms of the time were traditionally based on a nun's habit. Long, full skirts protected with bulky aprons along with large hats were the order of the day. Not originally considered a reputable profession, and nurses often were the poor and sometimes disreputable maidens of their day.

Florence Nightingale is credited with bringing respectability to the nursing profession, creating a formal nursing training program. One of her students designed her original nursing uniforms using a system of uniforms with differing bands and to denote skill levels and caps to cover the hair. The uniforms were used by all of the student nurses in her school of nursing and were copied by other nursing schools and hospitals. They remained very much the same until the 20th century.

Through passing years and ever-changing social standards, the larger caps were refashioned to be made easier to wear and clean. Caps became much smaller, covered less hair, and became known as a "handkerchief" hat. The women would fold and starch their own caps out a man's handkerchief. Then came the "graduate nurse cap" that was given to them at their graduation ceremony. These caps were mass-produced and eliminated the need to make a cap from a handkerchief.

The First World War saw dramatic changes in nursing uniforms as the need for faster treatment of wounded soldiers and led to the shortening of skirts and the elimination of bulky aprons.From the 1960's further changes happened. Although nursing training schools continued to award caps as a measure of educational progress and as an award at graduation ceremonies, the general nursing population moved away from wearing nursing caps on the job. Often becoming difficult to keep on the head while performing patient care, the trend moved toward functionality and comfort.

In the 1980's traditional nursing uniforms gave way to uniform scrubs. Originally worn solely in the operating room in colors of green or blue, uniform scrubs found their way into all areas of hospital nursing and into doctor and dental offices. Companies such as Cherokee Scrubs and Dickies Scrubs expanded the unisex scrub into a uniform with figure flattering styles for all body shapes and a multitude of colors and prints. Different hospital units took to wearing designated colors to differentiate their work space. Prints became fun and many pediatric prints helped make a child's hospital stay a little less imposing. By the 1990's uniform scrubs had become very popular, as they were easier to work in.

The responsibilities of caring for seriously ill patients makes nursing a stressful career. Wearing comfortable uniform scrubs and nursing shoes allows nurses to give quality patient care while still looking professional. Nursing uniforms are an essential part of the job. They signify the role that is played in the medical profession and allow the nurses to be identified. The uniform is worn for hygiene reasons as well as identification. There are now many different uniforms that can be worn and have come on a long way from the days of the boring, bulky, constrictive dress, apron and cap.
