The History of Fashion Design

What is Fashion Design?

Fashion design is an art form dedicated to the creation of garments apparel and lifestyle accessories. Modern fashion design is divided into two basic categories: haute couture and ready for use. The couture collection is dedicated to certain customers and is custom sized to fit these customers exactly. To qualify as a couture house, the designer has to be part of the Chambre Syndicale of Haute Couture and show a new collection twice a year presenting a minimum of 35 different teams each time.

Ready-to-wear collections are of size standard, not custom-made, so they are more suitable for producing large print runs. Also divided into two categories: designer / createur and clothing collections. Collections of designers have a higher quality finish and unique design. They often represent a certain philosophy and are built to make a statement rather than for sale. Both ready-to-wear and haute-couture collections are presented on the international catwalks.

Who invented it?

The first fashion designer who was more than just a seamster was Charles Frederick Worth, in the 19th century. Before mounting his fashion design house in Paris, the dress was made by anonymous dressmakers and fashion standards are derived from the styles used by royalty. Worth was the first designer to really direct their customers to be put in place to further their demands.

His fashion house became so famous that people were able to connect a face and name to the designs when they knew which were of the House of Worth. This was the beginning of the tradition is not a designer of a house only create clothes, but also represent the symbol of the brand.

What it takes to be a fashion designer?

Fashion design is an art form. For as a designer, you must have a personality artistic and creative. You also have to be good at drawing and the possibility to express their ideas in sketches. Not necessarily have to be a great artist, but keep some special skills to match the colors, tones and shades. You also have to be able to work with fabrics and textiles used in a creative and original. Designers fashion have a visual imagination and are able to think in three dimensions and put his ideas into clothes.

Fashion designers need to be aware needs of the fashion market. They have to be very interested in learning new things and read magazines, newspapers and books on the history of fashion design and new trends. They also have to be interested in art, visit art galleries and interact with all kinds of artists if they have the opportunity. The designer also must have some knowledge and experience of editing (cutting, draping, sewing, etc.) and be able to distinguish the difference between different quality levels material.

A good understanding of the lifestyle of the audience and customer needs and requirements is also needed in fashion design. Designers must have good communication skills and be able to express their ideas clearly. But more importantly, they have to be very original and have fresh, innovative ideas.
