Although many works now considered seminal in the genre were published in 1960 and 1970, the term steampunk originated in the 1980's as a variant of the tongue in cheek of cyberpunk. It seems to have been coined by science fiction author KW Jeter, who was trying to find a general term for works by Tim Powers (author of The Anubis Gates, 1983), James Blaylock (Homunculus, 1986) and himself (Morlock Night, 1979 and Infernal Devices, 1987) that took place in a century 19 (usually Victorian) Farm and imitated conventions of actual fiction Victorian speculative as The Time Machine by HG Wells. In a letter to the science fiction magazine Locus, printed in April 1987 issue, Jeter wrote:

Dear Locus,

Attached is a copy of my 1979 novel Morlock Night, I'd appreciate your being so kind as to the route Faren Miller, as it is a fundamental part of the evidence in the great debate about that in "the Powers / Blaylock / Jeter fantasy triumvirate" was written in the "gonzo-historical manner" first. Although of course, I found your review in the March Locus to be quite flattering.

Personally, I think Victorian fantasies are going to be the next much, as long as it can come with a period of collective adaptation of Powers, Blaylock and myself. Something on the basis of appropriate technology at the time, as "steampunks" maybe ...

Steampunk was influenced by and often adopts the style of 19th century scientific romances of Jules Verne, HG Wells, Mark Twain and Mary Shelley. Rudyard Kipling "With the night mail: a history of 2000 AD "and" Easy as ABC "could easily qualify as steampunk.

William Gibson and Bruce Sterling's 1990 novel The Difference Engine is credited often bring widespread awareness of this genre among science fiction fans. This novel applies the principles of the writings of cyberpunk of Gibson and Sterling to alternate Victorian era, where proposed by Charles Babbage's mechanical computer steam, which he called a difference engine (later more commonly used version motor is known as analysis), was constructed, and led to the dawn of the information age more than a century "ahead of schedule."

An anthology of steampunk fiction was released in 2008 by Tachyon Publications, edited by Ann and Jeff Vandermeer and appropriately titled Steampunk, which recounts the story of James Blaylock, whose "Narbondo" trilogy is typically considered steampunk, Jay Lake, author of the novel the main dock, sometimes called "clockpunk" the aforementioned Michael Moorcock, as well as Jess Nevins, famed for his annotations to The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

While most of the original steampunk works had a historical setting, later works often place items in a steampunk fantasy world with little relation to any specific historical era. Historical steampunk tends to be more "science fictional": presenting an alternate history, real places and people in history with technology different. Fantasy-world steampunk, as China Miville Perdido Street Station and Jackelian Stephen Hunt novels, however, presents a completely steampunk kingdom of imaginary fantasy, often populated by legendary creatures coexisting with steam era or anachronistic technologies.

In general, the category includes any recent science fiction that takes place in a recognizable historical period (Sometimes an alternate-history version of a real historical period) where the industrial revolution has already begun but electricity is not yet widespread, with an emphasis on gadgets steam-powered or spring. The most common historical steampunk settings are the Victorian and Edwardian eras, although some in this "Victorian steampunk" category can go as early as the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. Some examples of this type include the novel machine differential, the comic book series League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, the Disney animated film Atlantis: The Lost Empire, and the RPG Space: 1889. Some of them such as the comic series Girl Genius, have their own unique time and place despite largely involved the flavor of historic times and settings.

Karel Zeman film The Fabulous World of Jules Verne from 1958 is an early example of cinematic steampunk. Based on Jules Verne's novels, which were actually science futuristic fiction that were written, Zeman's film imagines a past based on the novels that never was. Other early examples of steampunk films include historical Hayao Miyazaki anime films such as Laputa: Castle in the Sky (1986).

Historical steampunk usually leans more towards science fiction fantasy, but there has been a series of historical steampunk stories that incorporates magical elements as well. For example, Morlock Nights by KW Jeter revolves around an attempt the wizard Merlin to raise King Arthur to save Great Britain's 1892 invasion of the Morlocks in the future. The Anubis Gates Tim Powers involves a cabal wizards among beggars and thieves of the early 19th century London underworld.

Paul Guinan boilerplate, the biography of a robot in the 19th century, began as a website which received international press coverage when people began to believe that Photoshop images of the robot with historical characters were real. The site was adapted in a sample Repetitive hardcover: Mechanical Marvel History, published by Abrams in October 2009. Because history is not set in an alternate history, and actually contains accurate information about the Victorian era, some booksellers who refers to the volume as "historical steampunk."

Fantasy the world

Since the 1990's, the application of the steampunk label has expanded beyond works set in recognizable historical periods (Usually the century 19) to works set in fantasy worlds that rely heavily on technology or spring steam propulsion. A prominent example this type of fantasy literature is a steampunk flavor Philip Pullman series His Dark Materials (Northern Lights / The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass) located in alt-world Victoria, which incorporates steampunk elements, such as dirigibles and technology based on a clock, elements of fantasy and animal form and armored companions polar bears, and science fiction elements such as parallel universes.

Fantasy steampunk settings abound in board games and computer role. Notable examples include Final Fantasy VI, Skies of Arcadia, Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends, Edge of Twilight, and Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magic Dark.

In the midst of historical and fantasy sub-genres of steampunk is a type that occurs in a hypothetical future or a fantasy equivalent of our future where technology steampunk style and aesthetics have come to dominate. Examples include the anime Turn A Gundam (1999-2000), post-apocalyptic anime Hayao Miyazaki Future Boy Conan (1978), Philip Reeve Mortal Engines quartet and the Disney movie Treasure Planet (2002).

John Clute and John Grant have introduced another category: gaslight romance. According to them, "steampunk stories are most commonly located in a romantic smoke-filled 19th century in London as well as romances Gaslight. Games

Various modern utilitarian objects have been modded by amateurs in a pseudo-Victorian mechanical "steampunk" style. Sample items include computer keyboards and electric guitars. The goal of such redesigns is to employ appropriate materials (eg, polished bronze, iron and wood) with design and manufacturing elements in line with the Victorian era.

The group of artists Kinetic Steam Works brought a working steam engine for the Burning Man festival in 2006 2007. founding member, Sean Orlando, also created a Steampunk Tree House which has been shown at several festivals.

In May, June, 2008, multimedia artist and sculptor Pablo San Jorge exposed outdoor interactive video installations linking London and Brooklyn, New York Telectroscope in a Victorian-era style. Evelyn Kriete, a promoter and collaborator of brass goggles, organized a Transatlantic wave steampunk enthusiasts of both cities, in few words before White Mischief Around the World in 80 steampunk-themed day event.

In 2009 Tim Wetherell artist created a large wall piece for Questacon (The National Science and Technology in the center Canberra, Australia) representing the concept of the clockwork universe. This piece of steel contains moving gears, a working clock, and a film completion of the moon in the action. Moon 3D movie was created by Antonio Williams.

The Warehouse 13 Syfy series has inspired many steampunk objects and artifacts, including computer designs created by steampunk craftsman Richard Nagy, aka "Datamancer."

From October 2009 until February 2010, the Museum History of Science at Oxford hosted the first major exhibition of works of steampunk art, curated by Art Donovan and presented by Dr. Jim Bennett, the director of the museum. From gadgets redesigned fantastic practical elements, the exhibition showed the work of eighteen artists Steampunk worldwide. The exhibition was be the most successful in the history of the museum and attracted more than eighty thousand visitors.

Culture

Due to the popularity steampunk with goths, punks, cybergoths, industrial music fans, gamers, and geeks, there is a growing movement towards establishing steampunk as culture and lifestyle. Some fans of the genre take a steampunk aesthetic through fashion, home decor, music and film. This can be described as neo-Victorian, which is the merger of Victoria aesthetic principles with modern sensibilities and technologies. Some have proposed a steampunk philosophy, sometimes with anti-establishment feelings in the punk-inspired, and usually driven by optimism about human potential.

Steampunk fashion has no set guidelines, but tends to synthesize modern styles influenced by the Victorian era. This may include gowns, corsets, petticoats and bustles, suits with vest, coats and leggings, or clothing military inspiration. Steampunk-influenced costumes often accented with a mixture of technological accessories and the period of: watches, sun glasses, and the beam weapons fire. modern accessories like cell phones or music players can be found in steampunk costumes, having been modified to give the appearance of Victorian-made objects. Steampunk fashion aspects have been provided for high-current fashion, Lolita fashion and aristocrat styles, neo-Victorian, and the Goth subculture romantic.

Steampunk music is even less defined, as Caroline Sullivan says in The Guardian. "Internet debates rage about what exactly constitutes steampunk sound "steampunk This range of musical styles can be heard in the work of several artists steampunk, dance and world music industry in Abney Park, the "opera hip-hop industry," Dr. Steel and darkwave sounds and Verne synthpunk of Lords Unextraordinary process and the people of English and Carnatic influenced the music of Sunday Driver.

In popular culture

In 2006, the first time Neo-Victorian/Steampunk convention or large-scale event, SalonCon was carried out. It lasted three years, artists, musicians (such as Voltaire and Abney Park), authors (as Catherynne M. Valente and Ekaterina Sedia), lounges run by people outstanding in their fields, a seance cream tea and ballroom dance classes. SalonCon also featured workshops and panels on Steampunk and as Chrononauts Parade "(organized by GD and Evelyn Kriete Falksen). SalonCon was interviewed by MTV and The New York Times for their respective parts.

The United Kingdom Steampunk Festival Weekend at the asylum, bringing the main authors of the steampunk, artists and musicians with fans in general in the city of Lincoln in September each year. This is a growing event that attracts participants from around the world. In fact, it is held, appropriately, in a former Victorian lunatic asylum.

In February 2010, Knott's Berry Farm announced via Twitter that its annual Halloween "Scary Farm" would be "Victorian Vampire Steampunk" theme.

The first World Fair of Steampunk "(the name of world's fairs of the 19th century) will be held on 14-16 May 2010, at the Radisson Hotel Piscataway, New Jersey. The three-day event will feature some of the most outstanding artisans, authors, performers and musicians subculture.
