Are E-Book Readers Right For You?

Electronic book readers are in a funny place.

e-book readers are essentially cool gadgets – but the target market (avid readers) is a group likely to be more concerned with substance over style.

e-book readers work pretty well – but they’re new and still something of an unknown quantity. Most people still biding their time… so we still don’t know whether they’re the new iPod or the new Betamax.

e-book readers are money savers – and one of the great advantages is that you can get tons of reading material either free (out of copywrite literature) or for less than paper copies… and yet they cost about £200.

e-readers are also coming to maturity just at the time when people arew starting to spend less… so their fate be determined partly by completely unrelated economic factors…

So – should you take the plunge into e-books or not?

A few things to consider:

 

How much do you read?

 This is going to influence a) how much use you get out of the reader b) how much the convenience factor plays a part (if you only carry a single book once in a while, you won’t gain much from the portability of the reader) c) how much you will save on not buying hard-copy books.

In short, if you’re a light reader, e-book readers are probably not worth you’re while.

 

What do you read?

If you are into the classics and obscure books rather than bestsellers, getting a reader is going to mean that your reading material pretty much becomes free from now on! Popular books are cheaper on e-book than in hard-copy, but not by a lot.

 

Where do you read?

If you read at home (and particularly if you read in the

bath) then you’re probably better off with an old-fashioned book. If you travel a lot or commute, then the e-book reader really comes into its own.

 

Do you study?

e-book readers will probably become big news for students.

Being able to get all of your course books cheaper, lighter, and in one, portable place will make student’s lives a lot easier.
