Wahine over time. The History of Female Surfers

History and female surfers. Do you automatically think of Gidget? Either the blond Sandra Dee or the brunette Sally Fields? The old fashioned bikinis and the enormous surfboards. The sun always shines on the beach in California, with perfect waves with plenty of good looking guys and girls parading in their swimsuits.

Gidget The film was released in 1959, and the TV series in 1965. But did you know that in reality There are records of women surfers in Hawaii dating back to the 1600s? At that time, apparently, the women and men were equally like surf and no discrimination between genders, while in the waves.

The first famous surfer was considered a Polynesian demi-god, or kupu. This extraordinary surfer was known as Mamala and was recognized as a great and fearless surfer in the wildest of waves. Mary Ann Hawkins was a famous surfer in California in the 1920s. Faye Baird Fraser was the first woman to surf in San Diego.

The first person to surf in Australia was a 15 year old girl called Isabel Letham. He was chosen by the famous Duke Kahanamoku surfing tandem with him in 1914 at Freshwater Beach, the around the tip of world famous Manly Beach.

By late 1970 the ASP annual circuit had a division for women. At this time, female surfers like Rell Sunn, Linda Merrill, and Jericho Poppler came to fame for his skill in the surf.

Surfing for girls did not really seriously take off until late 1980. Before of this, girls are expected to be decorative on the sand in their bikinis, working on her tan. Boyfriends surfed and the girls watched. That's just the way it was. Until surfing was now regarded by many as a male sport. In many surf breaks girls were not welcome. His place was in the sand, or possibly in a table boogie mat navigation or off the road, closer to the shore with the kiddies.

By the end of 1980 for female surfing was really emerging. Lisa Anderson Florida began a new set of fashionable surf wear board shorts with her bikini. Today this seems a sensible option while out surfing and surf companies have large series of shorts for girls board surfing.

The surf wear is now worn by all and sundry. You need not live anywhere near the ocean or navigate using labels like Roxy. The women's surf wear is now synonymous with a healthy lifestyle and good vitality. Teenagers from around the world aspire to look like girls Roxy advertiser. All waves companies have been quick to detect this and perform their own labels for female surfers. This marketing campaign was a success resounding with women around the world.

Female surfing in the U.S. is the fastest growing sport. There has been a dramatic increase in surf camps women as goddesses and SwellWomen Surf and female surf schools like Maui Surfer Girls. Female surfers have come into his own and is an industry for themselves. Now, when we think of female surfers, images from the film "Blue Crush" fill our minds. Gorgeous, healthy, strong girls in bikinis and short surfboard with all your heart. This movie has been responsible for inspiring and motivating another generation of young female surfers. "If you want to feel the fever has to take the risk" was the theme of the film.

No article on female surfers would be complete without a mention of Layne Beachley. In early 2008, has earned an impressive 7 World titles. She has the best statistics for any surfer ever and has ridden a wave of 50 feet, the biggest wave ever ridden by a woman. Layne Beachley motto is "Do not give up." Great motivation for a great role model for all girls out there.

The new crop of new and successful women, includes the surfer Stephanie Gilmore of Australia, which is the current reigning ASP Women's World Champion. Sofia Mulanovich of Peru is the current leader of Women's World Tour 2008 ASP. (As of March 2008.) Megan Abubo remains Hawaii longstanding reputation of producing world class surfers.

Long history of Hawaii with surf that is appropriate that the term for female surfers "Wahine" actually comes from Hawaii. Blue Crush was filmed there. Surfers from around the world aspire to navigation or see the pipe at its highest. Hawaii is a prime location for perfectly situated female surf camps.

Female surfers have been around for centuries. Fortunately for all of us girls, female surfing is now perceived as a mainstream sport and industry. Today, female surfers are recognized and their needs and desires are being served. Feel the Rush, take the risk, never give up. Inspiring words for all girls everywhere.
