Is there a High Demand for Art Professors or Art Teachers?
I currently teach after-school and is interested in strengthening my career by advancing or getting full-time pay with benefits. The after-school market in Chicago is unstable right now and the state is cutting funding. I have a bachelors in arts, but I am interested in going back to school for my Masters. I am very proficient and experienced in the arts, specifically illustration and fashion. I will consider relocating to the right place if need be. However, I am not sure about what subject(s) to teach, what job in the education field is right for me, or which subject would be the best based on the current economical status. Can someone give advice please....thank you!
no, in fact these are some of the lowest demand positions in the teaching profession. in the public schools the art department is always the first to be cut in bad economic times. very few colleges have large art departments and most really heavily on part time faculty anyway. my college had only 6 full time professors. everyone else was adjunct, part time or grad students.
but i don't want to discourage you. just give you a realistic expectation of what's out there. my school started this year with 6 full time art teachers. going into next year we will have 3 including myself. if your background is in illustration and fashion you should consider teaching drawing or fashion itself. many larger high schools have fashion classes and most will have some sort of drawing class. there are always art jobs available somewhere. just be prepared for a potentially long search and a possible/probable relocation.
