Do you think that a company hired him as a self-taught industrial designer? I would think (or will like to think:)) portfolio matters more? Can coopearate with the fashion industry, if, again, no study of this. I once read an illustrator was hired by a fashion company because they liked his work so much. Portfolio and interview are always both most important, but having a knowledge of what the industry is going to apply is also very important. You only thing you can do is give it a try, no harm in the attempt, just make sure you do much research before going to any interview, it is likely that they will try a little about their knowledge of good industry lucky =]
