Coronado is a San Diego Island Treat
If there is a place where the charm of Southern California, history, style of beaches and sun all converge, it must be the 7.4 square kilometers of land you will find in the west end of bridge sweeping Coronado tall skyscrapers. Only 2.3 miles across the bay from downtown San Diego, Coronado Island is a secluded island in every way you can imagine - is still relatively quiet, dotted with palm trees, blessed with some of the best beaches in California, and adorned with some of the most beautiful and historical buildings in San Diego County.
But not you think this sounds like a great place to live, so, be sure that the ticket price will keep all but the most wealthy - unless of course it is willing to live on bread and water while making mortgage payments so high that everyone could buy a late-model car.
But it's so fun to visit Coronado. It is as it appears in your own episode of "Lifestyles of the rich and famous, if only for a few days at a time. Stroll through the famous Hotel Coronado and marvel at the fine jewelry and clothing design, or visit the trendy downtown shops and restaurants. Sit in an outdoor cafe? Nd people-watch to your liking, carefully distinguish between the tourists every day and the families of the CEO of tony, in tow, everybody stylized to the hilt.
Without doubt, the grand dame of Coronado is Hotel del Coronado and the life of this island is simply revolves around that property. No one comes to the island without having to pay tribute to hotel, winding through the bars and lobbies and garden pathways and then go to one of the widest beaches in all of California. There are constant reminders that, yes, this was the filming location for "Some Like It Hot" and, yes, Marilyn Monroe, once I was right where you stand. Even some of the most elegant Ms. Monroe pin up photos are displayed at the entrance of the hotel.
But surprisingly, the "Hotel" as the premises of Hotel call INPUT del Coronado, is not the only game in town, either by price or the desire to not be right in the center of all activity, many visitors opt for a of several other types of accommodation on the island. Our stay at the Glorietta Bay Hotel was a very different experience from the hotel, despite the great lady is on the other across the street.
Staying at the Glorietta Bay Inn was an opportunity to experience a historic mansion in San Diego - which was built by John Dietrich Spreckels, a well known figure in the city as someone who played a fundamental role in the development of San Diego during the late 1800's and after the change century. He bought the utility, the tram system, the water company and, finally, controlling to the Hotel Del Coronado. Visitors Balboa Park in San Diego will recognize the name of the famous Spreckels Pavilion, where visitors attend concerts at the Spreckels organ much given to the park when it is opened during the 1915 Pan American Exposition.
The mansion itself is an impressive piece of architecture - Italian Renaissance style, all white, several dramatic story lines. Inside, the wide marble staircase was our way to room 126 - the Albright Room, a spacious second floor with a feeling of open space, airy and overlooking the marina, the Coronado Bridge in the distance, the mountains east of San Diego. Decorated in Country French the room featured flowers, tasteful paintings and floral bedspreads bed with matching curtains. Almost all of the size of a suite, the room was furnished with reproductions classical furniture according to the time the house was built.
Downstairs, the Glorietta Bay Inn features a music room with grand piano in where guests can enjoy breakfast of pastries, cereals, breads and juices. There are other areas as well, which are quiet nice to sit and enjoy a colorful surroundings of the inn. The inn is quick to put a visitor in just the right mood to enjoy the island's many amenities and natural attractions.
The Glorietta Bay Inn is conveniently located just across the street from the beach and, if a California beach vacation is what you are looking for, this is one of the best places to look. If you follow Orange Avenue just steps to the east, is the commercial center. The road bends ever so gently across the district Business, Hotel Del Coronado, as seen from the beachnever look too urban or commercial because the avenue is divided in two by a wide lawn. Trees Palm mature grace both sides of the street giving a natural feeling to what otherwise might be just a common business district. Of course there is nothing ordinary about of the many historic buildings along Orange Avenue meandering.
Ads visitors an interesting blend of business center - luxury boutiques fine jewelry stores side by side with surf shops and tourist shops shirt. More Beach Grill and Deli, a local style of the island is transmitted through the creation of porcelain statue-like having the menu on a surfboard, and 50 of skating carhop pointing the way. Beside the dairy Moo-time has the same kind of curiosity, in this case fashioned after Elvis and a cow. But just across the street is a shop with a wide zillion million dollars of jewelry, including Robin Leach would be hard to pay.
The restaurants are plentiful, although the word to the wise about a place we visited called Miguel. Apparently, the word is that it is a good Mexican food, as presented at 7 pm on Thursday to find a wait an hour before I could even sit. Toughed it out and the food was good - but we're not sure it was so good.
If you are driving to the island - and most people, if you have a rental car and drove from somewhere in California - is worth exploring the island. The Silver Strand beach area continues for miles. The east side of the island is the ferry landing area where there is a shopping mall, restaurants and a quick boat ride to downtown San Diego.
It's also fun to look at beautiful houses. In fact, many of the houses are nothing special - except the price. ordinary households, average, not to see two and three bedroom easily sold in the millions. It can not be good for a condo million dollars, but really good with the points of view are well above that. Even those houses back in the Midwest could not sell them for money more than enough to buy a fixer-upper on this island.
Even if you do not have a car, there are many other ways to explore Coronado. For example, Coronado Pedicab Coronado Tours offers 30 and Pier 60 minutes to see all island attractions. Another option is a time "motor route" that leads visitors Coronado around in a Volkswagen microbus 1965. Of, if you want a little exercise, there are several walking tours including one that departs from the Glorietta Bay Inn and focuses in all areas of local history.
The island includes many attractions. For example, the Museum of Art presents the early history of the island, with particular emphasis on military bases have called the island home. The theater is an important part of the local entertainment scene and visitors can enjoy performances Coronado Community Theatre in and the player of the Lamb's Theatre. Art lovers will enjoy the exhibition Art in the Park-place in the first and third Sundays of each month.
