The Good, The Bad and The Ugly Yarn - Knitting FLEA Finds
When shopping locally for thread, needles and pattern books, the first that comes to mind is your neighborhood yarn store. Perhaps the large craft stores second place, followed by huge discount points. However, several weavers in the Daily Knitter Forums sing the praises of flea markets. Describe an impressive selection and amazing prices, so the editors decided to organize daily Knitter a group outing. Explore three flea markets in northern Illinois and now can report the good, the bad and the ugly. Yarn very ugly, what it is.
Each market fleas we visited had a large selection of used books. Romance paperbacks were the most numerous, however, were surprised by the variety of pattern books available point. One vendor offers a whole section of vintage craft books, with a full shelf devoted to knit. Our favorite find was in 1968 Feast of hand sample Fleisher Fabrics Bear Brand Yarns Botany. Now we have a wonderful retro Knitting Patterns book, all are in fashion today ... and only costs us 99 cents!
Though Could not find a job that focused exclusively on the supply point, we found cups knitting needles through the flea market. There often only one of the two, but we collected a series of 3 double pointed needles for 50 cents. We also found a shoebox full circular needle in a stall selling mostly remnants of fabric. After some serious negotiations, one of the Daily Knitter editors took home the entire box.
Boy saw some ugly wool. A special stand was the mother lode and was a little scary to see everything in one place. The owner informed us that the string is at garage sales, the auctions of property, and discards even yarn company. She explained that sells a lot to teachers and summer camps, they love the thread of the children's projects. We did find a yarn of high quality electric orange with accents of green. Now where is that book in the dyeing of yarn?
With over 200 miles in the minivan at the end of the day, and what seemed like miles away from our feet, we conclude that the buttons were our best find. The variety in all different places was amazing. If you are looking for an old button to stop a purse or a set of glass buttons a cardigan, which is highly recommended by the flea markets. What a great way to make your knitting projects one of a kind.
