The Taking of Pelham 123 - REVIEW

8.5 out of 10

The Taking of Pelham 123 is a stain, original reinvention of 1974 is filled to the brim with suspense, action and the only thing missing in many shows high budget, good old fashioned character development. director Tony Scott has created a tension filled thriller with John Travolta and Denzel Washington both share a chemistry that drives follows a breathless pace until the successful conclusion. The plot basically goes like this; Travolta Ryder (his alias) sequesters Pelham 123 at 2:13 pm and requires a ransom of $ 10 million dollars that is given within an hour or it will start killing hostages. Ryder refused to talk to the police dispatcher and Washington as Walter Garber train is forced to serve as negotiator. Scott keeps the film in high suspense and brings a feeling for kinetic action sequences and chase scenes keep your eyes glued to the screen. The writer Brian Helgeland best known for LA Confidential, has written an intelligent script with great dialogue, it is fast paced and exciting while developing the way the characters beyond what could have been the stereotypical psycho about the hero despite himself.

Denzel Washington is terrific as a common man Walter Garber bring gravity and a quiet dignity to his performance, maintaining a factual Walter never once which allows the character to fall into cliche mode of action hero. Garber is the heart and soul of the film and you will find yourself pulling it from the first time Washington opened his mouth to the final scene of the film. Washington is an amazing actor at the top of his craft and I do not see that changing anytime soon.

What can you say about John Travolta? The great man plays psychopaths and their performance in Pelham 123 is no exception to the rule. With his handle bar mustache, tattoo neck and menacing glare, which is a bad girl who does not want to mess with. He puts a psycho delicious in every line of dialogue and rejoice in his madness. I've always liked Travolta as the villain, but in movies like "Face / Off and Broken Arrow, goes on the top with their performances. That does not happen in this case. Travolta has masterfully adequacy to the edge, but never crosses the line. Travolta gives a real performance Creepy and fascinating not want to end.

The actors are all superb performance, and especially John Turturro and James Gandolfini. Turturro plays a negotiator held hostage by police in New York and although he is forced to take the second chair Garber of Washington, Turturro never once allows the character to become a cliché pain in the ass, egotistical. On the other hand, infuses the character with a humanity that makes it endearing and real and helps keep the film grounded. James Gandolfini has the Mayor New York fiction as a combination of Mike Bloomberg and Rudy Giuliani and pulls it off fabulously. Gandolfini gives the mayor a quiet strength while giving him a sensible approach is well suited to the Big Apple.

To summarize, the taking of Pelham 123 is an electrifying thrill ride becomes even better in the chemical and power sharing as the home of Washington and Travolta. Pelham 123 is a ride not to be missed.
