Overseas projects Conservation Volunteers organize beach cleanups in Thailand
Sarah Gregson, has been in our conservation project in Thailand since early October, here we talk about a recent beach clean-up project that volunteers are involved in.
The twelve volunteers in the draft Marine Conservation in Thailand made a four-day trip to the local island of Koh Yao last month. The purpose of the trip was to clean the trash from the beaches of the island and areas community. In turn, was expected to increase awareness within the island community on the need to clarify your trash.
The volunteers traveled to the island by boat and were invited to a very picturesque journey passing other local islands rising out of the turquoise Andaman Sea. Once on the island of the group were taken to the village centerpiece of a traditional Thai house we could call home for the next few days. Some were excited to be maintained in the old wood, the house concerned, with its antique décor. Others were a bit horrified by the lack of shower or bathroom facilities! And the differences between the planks forming the floor proved to be a little scary.
After a big meal of rice from Thailand, the team of staff and volunteers went to different areas of the island to give priority to survey the area. Beaches of the island boasted beautiful views at sea and many of the volunteers felt the real need to clean them so they could be deservedly enjoyed by locals and some tourists on the island.
After a rather disturbed night's sleep, due in part to strong cocks, the team went into action at the first order in around a local mosque. Not only do volunteers pick up trash, but also made some effort a "cut grass and shrub planting Ground Force '. After two hours of hard graft in the area was much improved and volunteers was pleased with the outcome. The 261.7kg of waste is a document clear from our efforts.
In the afternoon after a swim in the beautiful warm sea water and rice joint team with clearing Ba Sai Beach. A total of 380.5kg of rubbish was collected. 149.6kg of this glass was a testament to the importance of volunteer work was.
The afternoon was spent chatting, drinking and singing with the guitar. However, after working hard day's work, many of the volunteers retired to the confines of their nets early.
The next day was spent in the same house as another round of mosque after a beach. Lunch is enjoyed on the beach with the added excitement of collecting coconut. One member of staff shimmies a coconut tree and cut thin. These were opened and many of the volunteers and sweet coconut milk for the first time. A great experience rare, only that teaching and projects abroad is all about!
That everyone involved in the evening with volunteers stay on the island enjoyed a barbecue at a beachfront bar. British volunteers trained in all the pleasures of toasted marshmallow, to the delight of Thais who had never had anything like!
The team got up at 5:30 in the morning to tidy the house, packing and breakfast. On the way back to the mainland the boat stopped at a reef Coral largely destroyed by the tsunami for volunteers to do some snorkeling and assess the reef. It is disheartening to see that though the reef was alive with fish that was being further threatened by the networks and other debris. After some time We had great fun scuba diving and snorkelling on the boat.
After hard work and collect more than 1,000 kg of waste in two days, volunteers were passionate about informing the Thais and tourists about the dangers of being responsible for the elimination of their waste. So the afternoon was spent back at home for planning projects abroad a new campaign.
