The Yankees eventually lost that game and the next, removing them from the playoffs.

However, its year ended with one of his most infamous moments in Game 7 of the 2001 World Series against the Arizona Diamondbacks blew the save in the bottom of the ninth inning, partly because of his own throwing error. Lost the series later in the inning, allowing only Bloop Luis Gonzalez with the bases loaded to score the winning run.

20022005

Injuries limited the playing time of Rivera in 2002. He was placed on the disabled list three times for the strains of the groin and shoulder, and threw only 46 innings, while accumulating only 28 saves in 32 chances. Despite concerns about its reliability sports journalists, Rivera quickly returned to form after returning to assume his role as closer on May 1, registering 40 saves in 46 chances with an ERA of 1.66 in 64 regular season games in 2003.

In 2003 the Latin American League Championship Series against rival Boston Red Sox, Rivera delivered one of the best playoff performances of his career. In Game 7, entered the ninth with the score tied at 55 and threw three scoreless innings en route to becoming the winning pitcher in the game. Although Aaron Boone eleventh-entry walk-off home said the Yankees World Series berth, Rivera was named MVP of the series for recording two saves and a victory. The Yankees eventually lost in the 2003 World Series against the Florida Marlins, Rivera allowed just one earned run in 16 innings they pitched in the postseason.

Prior to the 2004 season with one year left on his contract, Rivera signed a two-year extension worth $ 21 million, with an option for a third year in 2007. After the victory of the Yankees in the 2004 American League Divisional Series against the Twins, Rivera learned that two of his relatives had died in a swimming accident at his home in Panama. Despite its status as a doubt for the ALCS American League Red Sox, he returned to New York for Game 1 the same day of the funeral was held in Panama. He recorded a stop later that night and in Game 2. Although the Yankees won three games to none in the series, Rivera blew saves in Games 4 and 5, and the Red Sox won two games in extra innings to avoid elimination. In Game 4, the pinch runner Dave Roberts stole Rivera second base and scored on a hit to tie the game. In Game 5, Rivera entered with a one-run lead with runners on base and allowed a sacrifice fly for tie the score. Although only allowed one earned run in the 2004 postseason, the Red Sox 'comeback victory helped them become the first team in Major League history to win a best of seven series in which they lost three games to none. Finally won the 2004 World Series and broke the curse of the Bambino.

Unlike previous years, Rivera did not pitch during the winter in the offseason, leading to speculation that he needed more time to recover from the 2004 season, which did most of the aspects of his career end. His 2005 season started with a low score. After a while absent in spring training with bursitis of the elbow, blew his first two saves of the season against the Red Sox, scoring four consecutive blown opportunities against Boston, which goes back to the previous postseason. Fans booed at Yankee Stadium Rivera, altering their teammates and make them come to their defense. The section prompted journalists Baseball to wonder if his days as a dominant pitcher had ended. That later was greeted by Red Sox fans during pre-game presentation at Fenway Park next week, as recognition for their mediocre performance against the Red Sox. Took the ovation with a good sense of humor and the tip of his cap the crowd.

Rivera responded in dominant fashion and his 2005 season turned out to be, at that time in his career year statistically that individual. Pitching style

Rivera's signature pitch is his cut fastball or cutter. " The pitch breaks sharply to left-handed batters, showing the movement to end similar to a slider, but with the speed of a fastball. He mixes the blade a little four-seam and two-seam fastball. Roll the three lines in the low to mid-90 MPH, usually at 9295 MPH. Vary the movement as a cut through adjusting the pressure that puts the ball with his middle finger.

Rivera discovered accidentally cut while playing ball with Ramiro Mendoza in June 1997, finding that the lines launched in the bullpen began to move suddenly and unpredictably. After failing to straighten the playing field and prevent movement as a whole, was accepted and began using the pitch in games that prominently since 1998. When asked in his ability to throw the pitch came, he explained, "It was only God. I did nothing. It was natural." Rivera cutter has taught several pitchers, including Roy Halladay, now used as part of their repertoire.

"You know what's coming, but you know what's in horror films too. Still gets you."

ike Sweeney, referring their inability to hit the blade despite expected

Rivera's cut fastball pitch a respected among major league hitters. Chipper Jones, a once likened to a "Buzzsaw" (referring to his tendency to break bats left-handed batters') after witnessing his teammate Ryan Klesko rest three species of bats in a plate appearance against Rivera in the 1999 World Series. Jim Thome called it "the best field of play only once in the game. In 2004, ESPN.com ranked the court as the best "out of tune" in baseball. Buster Olney described his cut fastball as "the dominant tone of a generation. "ambidextrous Although usually hit against right-handed pitchers better see the ball release point, many ambidextrous right-handed bat against right-handed Rivera to avoid being stuck in his hands by his court.

Since Rivera is based on variations of a line, all of similar speed, much of its success is attributed to its impeccable control and ability to throw strikes consistently. His career 3.93 strikeout walk ratio in the regular season ranked fourth best in the history of the Great Leagues. Has achieved its success with a smooth surface, delivering "liquid" pitching, and easily repeatable motion allows a pitcher to release results consistent.

Legacy

"You know when you come to New York, Mariano gonna get. It is not right before the game. I start to think about him on the trip air upward. I know it's waiting, and he'll be there, and I have to do with the game on the line. So start preparing for it. I start thinking, 'What am I going to try to beat Mariano? "

Rivera is considered by many baseball experts the greatest closer in baseball history, although many modern closers compare unfavorably to those launched between 1960 and 1980. The role of art has been criticized for being too specialized and easy; closers in recent decades often entered games in the middle of entries with runners on base and had to throw multiple innings, while modern closers typically be called upon to pitch the ninth inning only the beginning. Despite being used both as a modern closer, Rivera has earned a reputation as a reliever of all time. Hall of Fame became more boot- Dennis Eckersley close calls him "the best ever, no doubt," while Trevor Hoffman, the only one with more saves over Rivera, said that "it will remembered as the best reliever in the game history. "Buster Olney says:" No other player can instill calm in the fans of his team as reliable as Mariano Rivera, the dominant game more and possibly the best relief pitcher of all time. "Joe Torre, who managed Rivera for much of his career, says, "It's better than ever. Not only the ability to pitch and perform under pressure, but the calm is put into the clubhouse." "Mo I respect more than anyone in the game. Man going around, is three outs and smoothies (Jorge) Posada's hand. Do you like someone who respects the game like he does, she respects the people who play with and against, and obviously his results speak for themselves. "

It's frustrating and it's hard [not], but at the same time, just go ahead and get the next opportunity. "He is highly respected among his peers for his professionalism. Fellow closer Joe Nathan said:" I admire the way he handled himself on and off the field ... You never see the show to anyone and respects the game. I've always admired him and always a compliment that I mentioned in the same sentence as him. "Despite the closer's role that is characterized by volatility and turnover, Rivera is known for its consistency. Rivera also has adjusted best ERA in the history of the MLB + (202), which means his career ERA is half the league average, adjusted for stage of the launcher.
