Hanging a Tire Swing in Your Yard
A tire swing is a great addition to any yard that houses small children. It’s an old fashioned way to inexpensively create a play area for kids outside. With a new tire swing, you and your spouse can sit and relax on your Patio Dining Set while your children take turns on the swing. When it comes to hanging your tire swing, follow these helpful instructions.
- First you want to purchase a large diameter rope from your local hardware store or lumbar yard. Make sure you’ve taken a rough measurement of the distance from the branch to where you want it to hang and add about ten feet for the inclusion of loops and knots.
- To prevent the tree and the rope to wear down, use a piece of rubber hose as protection. Make sure the hose is able to rest on the top of the branch where the support is placed.
- Then find an old tire to use as the swing seat. You probably have one lying around or else it’s easy to get one from local service stations as well as tire shops for dirt cheap, sometimes free.
- Before hanging, clean the tire with a power sprayer. Scrub out the old grimy deposits and rinse thoroughly. Be sure to clean completely on the inside and out.
- Next, you will need a power drill with at least half of an inch bits. One hole will be drilled into the bottom of the swing or the part that is under the seating area. This hole will deter rainwater from collection in the tire and becoming dormant. Be sure you do all you can to prevent the plugging of the tire’s holes.
- Loop the end of the rope over the branch which should be at least six inches in diameter for safeness. The farther up the swing is from the trunk area, the larger the supporting branch should be.
- Then, tie a square or overhand double knot in the rope leaving a small space for the loop to grow around the branch naturally.
- Get a temporary stand to hold up the tire while you approximate the height to hang it at. A helping hand would be great for this step.
- Next, take two wraps of rope around the tire. Then use another square or double hand knot the seal the deal at the tire’s end.
- Finally, adjust the swing height after a few days when the rope stretches out due to the weight of its passengers.
After that, relax, sit on your patio set and watch your children have the time of their lives.
