Glorious Paris Cafe
Paris Coffee is not just a place where one comes to drink a cup of coffee. In fact, a reality not go there - the word "Come" action presupposes a short time. People drop in at a cafe to go on living ... The story began at a time when Paris was a city so well equipped. In 1920th People have come to a cafe to warm up, attracted by the hot stoves. They sat there infinitely with a single cup of coffee and a book, sketch pad and pencil or on the job of a good friend or a loved one. Gradually formed small companies of regulars, many of which passed into history. Some, because of their undeniable talent and some by virtue of their knowledge with a genius.
French café is organized as a theater. The tables are turned toward the street in summer, right place on the pavement. Each one of the cafes of Paris has its own history and can boast of their own visitors. But one of them has more reason to be proud of its history than others. This is the legendary Rotonde, located in Montparnasse, 105.
Today it is a fancy restaurant and there is no atmosphere bitter, hungry and full bohemian smoke there ... this was more than 90 years ago when the cafe opened its doors to the public. Nobody thinks it's destined to become one of the Attractions in Paris and throughout Europe.
At that time anise vodka cost 5 cents, a breakfast - 10 sous. Lower prices attracted the Bohemia. Also tired of the Montmartre and started wondering about Paris in search of a better place. Picasso was the first to choose the place and he was followed by Chagall, Vlamink, Kandinsky, Léger and Apolline Gijom.
There was always a hot soup, coal and hot stoves. The atmosphere was free and easy, although there were some rules: the ladies were allowed to take your hat and smoke. On the other hand, were allowed to dance on the tables.
Haim Sutin painted his best works in the cafe (at that time when the cost of a cup of coffee, today sell for millions of dollars). Modigliani painted portraits of all the patrons of La Rotonde. His portraits cost nothing to friends and hot dinner of a shot of vodka for other visitors to the cafeteria. Jean Cocteau distributed poems, making fun of snobs, who were destined to come into the story ...
When Paris welcomed "Russian seasons", legendary Dyagilev Nizhinsky and came to La Rotonda order the music of young composers (Debussy, Prokofiev, Stravinsky, Milhaud, Satie). Young poets Max Voloshin, Anna Akhmatova and Vladimir Mayakovsky also were frequent guests of La Rotonde.
In 1903, Gabrielle Chanel sang there folk songs to the rapture of the audience. This is at La Rotonde, where she met her rich sponsor with whom live in the aristocratic Vichi and become a fashion queen, a personification of style.
Between the wars cafeteria was favored by writers like Hemingway, Breton, Fitzgerald. They smoked, drank and created masterpieces ...
Now La Rotonde is a fancy restaurant. visitors different, different topics of discussion, different views of the city ... but still retains the charm of its legendary past!
