Definition of the skirt
A skirt is a piece of tube or cone-shaped hanging from the waist and covers all or part of the legs.
In European culture, skirts are usually considered women's clothing. However, there are exceptions. The skirt is a traditional garment of men in Scotland, and some fashion designers such as Jean-Paul Gaultier, have shown men's skirts.
In its simplest form, a skirt could be a drapery dress made from a single piece of material (such as pareos), but most skirts are fitted to the body at the waist and fuller then with the fullness introduced by means of dart, gores, pleats, or panels. Modern skirts are usually made from light to medium weight fabrics such as denim, jersey, wool, or poplin. Skirts of thin or sticky fabrics are often worn with slips to make the material the best cloth skirt and modesty.
The hem of the skirt can be as high as the upper thigh or as low as the ground, depending on the vagaries fashion and the modesty or personal taste of the user.
Some medieval women of the upper class wore skirts over 3 meters in diameter at the bottom. In the other extreme, the miniskirts of the 1960s were minimal garments that may have barely covered the underwear when seated.
Costume historians often use the word "skirt" to describe the garments like skirts of 18 th century or earlier.
Beginning around 1915, skirts day dresses left the plant forever. For the next fifty years, it became fashionable short skirts (1920), then long (1930), then more short (the war years with their restrictions on fabric), then long (the New Look), the shortest after all during the 1960's, when he became in skirts as short as possible exposure, avoiding underwear, which was taboo.
Since the 1970's and increased his pants for women as an option for all but the most formal of occasions, no Skirt fashion has long dominated, with the short side and styles of the ankles often appear side in fashion magazines and catalogs.
