Do you Tutor English Language Learners? Set clear expectations - especially for speaking skills!
If you teach students in English speaking skills?
How can we effectively teach speaking skills for English language learner private? What are you going to realize for 60-120 minutes together? How to take meaningful conversation classes quite satisfied that his client feels and wants to retain for future lessons?
Speaking English means being able to actually use make more clear and comfortable. However, keeping a conversation in English is still a difficult task for many ESL and href = "http://www.compellingconversations.com/"> EFL students. Personally, I blame an old-fashioned, grammar curriculum obsessed with the creation of the common situation where students can recite obscure grammatical rules, but can not talk about their weekend plans or talking about movies. However, here we are. Students want develop their speaking skills, but provide full English classes few opportunities for genuine conversations. Therefore, many students in English English hire tutors to help them develop their speaking skills and conversation.
However, to effectively teach students English in conversation may be more difficult than it seems. What does the student want to learn? What will you really teach? How will progress be measured? Although sometimes younger students just want to talk and be heard, I have worked traditionally older, more serious students. Time is money and money matters.
We strongly recommend that you establish clear expectations about the content and business. Some teachers tend to present a written contract, describing their types, location and meeting schedules and payment policies. One of my university colleagues makes students sign a form that allowed him to record images of the entire tutoring session for his research. Another demand for prepaid packages of 10 sessions at once. I've never been so formal, but I have never been also burned the way in which some tutors have been. In fact, I had only positive experiences with customer conversation.
Why? Such time lucky, maybe because I carefully screen potential clients. I only work with professionals, postgraduate students, and / or friends and spouses of friends a solid foundation in English. Be explicit about what he wants and does not want to teach a client. Be prepared to provide options for potential customers you rejected.
It also establishes clear expectations. This process eliminates the possible confusion and provides clear benchmarks. We will review X number of items and discuss and number of topics during the next month or semester. We will cover a significant amount of ground in a comfortable, relaxed manner.
For students who want to improve their conversation, we recommend that you select the topic and materials in advance. You can use newspapers and magazines to find appropriate articles to start the conversation. I used to assign items a week ahead and give my leaves students conversational English.
Partly as result of these weekly classes for some years, I wrote Compelling Conversations: Questions and quotes on timeless themes. The book includes 45 chapters conversation over 1400 questions, another 500, and 450 specific vocabulary words. The combination of poignant questions, vocabulary lists, proverbs and quotations ingenious ago their job much easier. Each chapter is independent.
If you have a weaker student looking to improve their speaking skills, then I would advise using a picture dictionary. There are several good options. You can use the Oxford Picture Dictionary for opening talks, and I would be tempted ask the client to the photos and ads each week. Confession: it almost always refers to other English tutor weaker students who enjoyed working with lower level ESL students.
Of course, you need patience mentoring of ESL customers talk abilities. Be prepared to repeat words, listen carefully and remind students to pronounce word endings. Many students want to work on his pronunciation. Recording of tutoring can be very useful for students.
You can also request / assign listening activities on the web. I like the voice of the special programs of American English through advanced students. You will have to address the lower levels to websites to practice their listening and speaking skills with drills. I love the work, you could go crazy repeating vowel sounds and noting stress words.
Finally, the key to teach ESL students - or anyone else - is maintained respect for the student, meeting their needs, and providing a solid structure for your lessons. I have found that the use of a text, developing a familiar routine, and the combination of conversation, vocabulary and some writing skills is a successful and satisfying experience.
As William Shakespeare noted four centuries ago, "All's Well That Ends Well. "Therefore, you should also have the grace to know when to end their lessons. Some clients want to keep working with you. However, you remain the guardian. Therefore, set a clear goal for your package of lessons, and end when the students have achieved that goal. As the Hollywood cliche says, "keeping them wanting more."
What are your plans and goals to teach English students this year?
