Preparation of the alpaca to show

When we take our alpacas to a show that you are probably asking more than can ever ask them. Often halter trained quickly separated from their friends in the flock, loaded on a trailer for what may be the first time, led to an unknown place confined in pens for up to three days with no opportunity to graze or exercise, from his pen on his own, led to a show ring (sometimes with an unknown and inexperienced driver) when they have teeth, the upper node, neck, tail, fleece and, if male, the testes examined by a judge who has 250 others still consider alpacas. The show ring (and the path to it) is packed with young children with helium balloons or candy floss, barking dogs, people trying to stroke and, to cap a strong Tannoy will be issuing forth a shrill cry of feedback noise (oh yes, and the ring will probably close the show jumping ring, backfire screen steam and / or fairgrounds).

Through this we want to maintain calm, calm, move with grace and presence of the ring rather than backward, running, elastic joint, fight or spit on anyone during the whole experience.

It is a testament to the alpacas as a species that some of them manage to achieve this and some really enjoy the whole experience show. Unfortunately, not all do and there are many alpacas do well in shows, but they are "very difficult" to handle in the ring and stay home. There are also many owners, many of those who would like to show, but have little idea of how to prepare their alpacas with success for the show ring.

I hope to give you some ideas on this article of how to go about this and share with you some of the steps I take to make "preparation show '. All my work is based on Camelidynamics methods developed by Marty McGee Bennett and TTEAM camelid, horse, complete and animal training methods developed by Linda Tellington-Jones and for them and other instructors TTEAM am eternally grateful.

I can not speak for the preparation of alpacas successful show without explaining that to me is the culmination of the whole system of Camelidynamics that part of the first time I worked with a calf in its first week or month, and covers how to ask an animal without moving, how to develop your confidence in us when handling and working with halter and show it when driving. We do all these steps with kindness and respect for the animal and objective never to distress, or to lose their trust in us. Handling an animal it is a skill that can be learned and like any skill that improves with practice.

Without the space to describe in detail above, in spite of all this is covered (and more!) In the companion Camelids by Marty McGee Bennett I like to run through some key steps to prepare your alpaca to display.

If judges are reading this, please be careful when considering testicles! For animals that have not had this type of preparation the examination of the testes in a hasty or heavy delivery may lead to certain behaviors problem later in the ring! Do not expect your alpaca to do all this at once! This makes them much more inclined to retreat to reduce pressure on the head, which is exactly the opposite response that we want!

Teach alpacas for driving in a long line and with a wand. The benefit of the timeline is that I can be a good distance ahead of them and therefore are more willing to move when I ask. If I'm too close to them are reluctant to move forward. The combination of the long line and the pitcher also prevents them from running in front of me. Horse leads are too short for this exercise.

Once you have taught me to bring the alpaca shorten to head a little and go out for an interesting ride. I always take my alpacas in an interesting and difficult (but not scary!) first exit, because I want to listen to my signals and learn to trust me. # Your work through some obstacles alpacas as a simulated show ring. We have created a obstacle course in a field. Most of it is permanently set up so that I can train newcomers, alpacas here for recycling and breeding. The details of these can be found in a previous paper *. To prepare to show you also set up a simple square poles made of white plastic tape horse and a little white horse tape. Make sure your animals are happy to be handled by you on the first ring. Food can be very distracting, I do not use it to train, but has its uses animals to help relax when the "judge" approaches.

5. Get ready! The next point in training your pet to behave in the ring is to train! Do not pull or drag the animal along. Alpacas are very good at lowering their center of mass by extending the neck, extending their feet and change its weight in the back, in response to constant pressure in the head. If they plant needed to ease off on the lead rope completely, relax, breathe deeply and then give the signal that they have been taught to "ask" them to move. We teach a 'soft ratchet' sign on our courses. The second pressure is put on the line, you are throwing the balance and affect its course. The next time you are in sight; see other managers and their lead ropes and see this for yourself!

Asking your alpaca standing quietly in the ring - this is another opportunity same clock so you will have to hold the lead rope close to the rope, but once again see that there is a constant pressure, and a small amount of slack in the lead rope. It's fun for the public to see alpacas leap into the air when the judge comes for the fleece, but is less fun for the alpaca, the driver, the ring steward and the judge. Some tips may help here:

If you know your animal is likely to do this, you can become more heavy handed and put constant pressure on lead rope or trying to keep the animal. Because of these two animals to jump up, the fight against the driver intuitively is that an easing at this point.

You may get nervous when approaching the judge. Try breathing. Better yet, when you exhale, exhale slowly and audible (for the alpaca). This makes a great difference for both. Their level of stress, their tendency to heavy hands and body language are all affected, and in turn affect your alpaca. As you know, alpacas are sensitive and attuned to what you are feeling.

Make a virtual pen capture the ring. Finally, some tips to help your alpaca relax in a show.
