The effect of Teenage Magazine

"Do not read beauty magazines. Only make you feel ugly."

That is just one of the many useful suggestions instilled Baz Luhrmann song sunscreen (which is originally an essay by Mary Schmich). This is also one of the pieces of advice found in the song that probably never met.

Most teenagers no doubt have read, or at least have given a turn through the pages of popular somehow and beauty magazines today: Seventeen, Vogue, Cosmo, etc. It has been argued, however, that reading this type of magazines makes young readers somehow feel ugly.

Operation: Perfection

Appears. This is what these magazines seem to prioritize. Take if only at least a glance at the cover of one of these magazines. The flooding that headlines like dress to impress, be A Knockout and lose the extra weight. Most of the articles within the pages also tend to revolve around what one look good and be more beautiful. No But what does it mean to be beautiful anyway? If we take the definition according to what is shown in these magazines, be beautiful apparently means that both girls tall, blond and skinny with long straight hair strands. What about those who do not fall into this group though?

The importance of putting on the appearance not only seen in the content of the articles in these magazines. Analyze and see how more pages to ads that often show the typical adolescent as someone with a perfect and polished. However, it is not entirely the fault of these magazines. Teenagers, of course, will be bombarded with self-esteem issues, whether they read magazines Beauty or not. Although just looking at the pages of these magazines, who constantly tell an early age that their bodies are not good enough and that need improvement continuous, their attitude toward their bodies deteriorated to the point that not only have low self-esteem, but self-loathing.

Image problems body

Studies show that seeing thin, sexualised and digitally-enhanced images of women in magazines, most of the time, result the experiences of young women of poor body image, depression, anxiety and eating disorders. A five-year study also found that reading of beauty and fashion magazines is associated with the desire to lose weight and initiating diets. Reading diet advice in magazines was associated with skipping meals, smoking, vomiting and laxative use among adolescents.

Their bodies seem to become the "personal project" of girls. They are encouraged to themselves as objects, to be valued for their appearance rather than a whole person. What is even sadder is how some girls end up risking their health that aspire to resemble images unattainable models and celebrities in magazines. What these girls do not know - or probably refuse to know - is that what they see in these magazines is not reality. Images of Barbie-ish models and celebrities are apparently photoshopped. On the other hand, do not represent ordinary teenager.

Being a master filter

However, adolescents do not need to completely stop reading and beauty fashion magazines. After all, no matter how negatively these magazines affecting girls, could not deny the fact that they are able to help in ways, especially with the inspiration and empowerment offered by these magazines articles too.

What teens need to learn to do instead is to identify, among the many images and ideas they eat, what to feed and that not doing so. Nobody wants more children, due to major setbacks, accumulating waiting to be treated by nurses and physicians with various medical instruments and home health products. This can be avoided, especially if we bear in mind that beauty is in fact only skin deep anyway. Cliché, yes, but true.
