How To Choose The Right Walking Shoes For You
Walking vs. Running - Different Shoes!

Many people think that walking shoes and running shoes are the same. This is complete fiction. Both are not created equal and should not be confused when shopping for shoes. Running shoes are constructed with more durability in the midsole, where your foot hits the ground when running. To better facilitate a rolling movement from heel to toe, walking shoes have a thinner midsole. A thinner midsoler creates a more natural walking feeling for your feet. Running shoes have stiff outsoles (bottom of the shoe), while walking shoes have a thinner outsole to facilitate more natural movement.
Guidelines for Choosing Walking Shoes
I cannot overstate the importance of knowing what to look for in a walking shoe. Taking your time can mean a world of difference - from wanting to walk all the time in your favorite shoes to not wanting to walk at all in a pair that hurts. When you buy a pair of walking shoes, look for:
To facilitate a natural rolling movement from heel to toe, a round or beveled heel.
A shoe that has a flexible forefoot that bends not at the arch of the foot, but at the ball of the foot.
A breatheable and lightweight shoe - the very last thing you want is heavy, clunky footwear.
A forgiving "upper" - the upper is the top part of a shoe.
The importance of proper fit
The best fitting shoe means the most comfortable shoe. A comfortable shoe means not the most expensive shoe, but one you love the feel of wearing. For proper fit, please:
Fit your shoes near the end of the day, as your feet will be both tired and swollen.
Try on a full size larger than you usually wear.
Wiggle room is important, as is never touching the end of the shoe with your toes.
Try on many pairs.
Walk on hard floor as well as carpet with each.
It is important to wear the same socks you will use when you exercise.
More people are turning to walking as a low impact alternative to running. It is a different movement, and requires a different type of shoe. Choosing the right walking shoe can help you get the most from every step you take.
