Ottawa, as Canada's capital, is one of the destinations in Canada's most popular travel and has a variety destinations, activities and events to offer.
I the opportunity to talk with Jantine Van Kregten Tourism Ottawa, who kindly gave me a great overview of things to see and do in Ottawa.
1. By Please give us a general information about Ottawa. How big is the city where you are, what's the weather?
Ottawa is the capital of Canada and its fourth largest city. With the neighboring city of Gatineau, Quebec province, the region has about 1.2 million people. Ottawa is located in eastern Ontario, northeast of about four hours drive from Toronto, two hours west of Montreal and an hour north of the border with the state of New York.
Ottawa account with four distinct seasons, with warmer temperatures and high humidity at times in July and August, a warm fall with magnificent colors of autumn, a winter cold and snowy and wet spring.
2. How do you get to Ottawa and what is the best way to get around in Ottawa?
Ottawa is accessible with direct flights from major centers in Canada and several U.S. cities like New York, Washington, Chicago, Philadelphia, Detroit, Atlanta and more. Ottawa is a major stop along the Windsor-Quebec City corridor, VIA Rail and bus service also links the city with other Canadian cities.
In car, Major thoroughfares include Highway 416 which links Ottawa with Highway 401. Highway 417 runs through the city, while Autoroutes 5, 50 and 148 are the main roads Quebec side of river.
3. Ottawa is the capital of Canada and has played a significant role in the history of this country. Please tell us more about it and the Canadian Heritage Experiences offered in Ottawa.
The story begins in Ottawa with the construction of the Rideau Canal between 1826 and 1832 by Lieutenant Colonel John By of the Royal Engineers and thousands of mostly Irish workers. The canal extends 202 kilometers (126 miles) through eastern Ontario to the St. Lawrence River and was built to ensure a supply line in case of U.S. attack (which never came). The canal was never used for military purpose and its 49 locks function even in the same way as when they were built. In fact, the Rideau Canal is a candidate for Canada to be named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is expected in 2007 the 175th anniversary of its construction.
Queen Victoria decreed in 1857 that Ottawa would be the capital of the country which became Canada. The majestic building Parliament were built soon after and remain a "must see" attraction in the capital. In the capital, Ottawa is also home to 24 Sussex Drive (Prime minister's residence and not open to the public); Rideau Hall (Governor General's headquarters, guided tours of residence and gardens available), and dozens high commissions and embassies of governments around the world.
Do not miss Laurier House, home to both Sir Wilfrid Laurier and William Lyon Mackenzie King, two former first ministers, and the Mackenzie King Estate, King's summer home in Gatineau Park.
4. Please tell us about some of the main attractions, museums and galleries in the Ottawa area.
The latest addition to the national museum scene is the impressive Canadian War Museum, which opened in May 2005 in a stunning location beside the Ottawa River. Canada's most visited museum in Gatineau's Canadian Museum of Civilization. The National Gallery of Canada offers the largest collection of Canadian art, along with European and American masters. Other cultural facilities are the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography, Aviation Museum Canada Science and Technology Museum Canada Agriculture Museum Canada, the Royal Canadian Mint, the Currency Museum of the Bank of Canada and the Canadian Museum of Nature, now in the midst of a massive renovation project to be completed in 2009.
Other museums are the Bytown Museum, which has the history of the early days of Ottawa, including the construction of the Rideau Canal, the Billings Estate Museum tells the story of a local family, and the funky Diefenbunker, Canada's Cold War Museum, a four-story underground bunker was built between 1959 and 1961 as the location where the Canadian military and political elite to weather the effects of a nuclear attack.
5. Our readers want to know the parties and special events in Ottawa.
The festival scene in Ottawa is a matter robust throughout the year. The year started with Winterlude, a great winter festival held in the first three weekends of February. In March, the Irish community celebrates week in Ireland, and in March and April, the maple syrup season generates a number of festivals and events celebrating this tasty delicious treat.
May belongs the Canadian Tulip Festival - three weeks of holding Ottawa's favorite flower. During the Second World War, the Dutch royal family took refuge in Ottawa and Princess Margriet was born here in a hospital room designated Dutch soil for the event. During the summer months, festivals abound: Doors Open Ottawa will present the heritage buildings, Italian Week, the Ottawa Fringe Festival, TD Canada Trust International Jazz Festival Ottawa, the Nortel Ottawa Dragon Boat Race Festival, Cisco Systems Ottawa Bluesfest (the largest in Canada), International Ottawa Chamber Music Festival (the largest in the world), Sound of Light Fireworks Festival, Busker Festival Ottawa, Ottawa GreekFest; CKCU Ottawa Folk Festival, Exhibition Centre of Canada, and Pride Week.
On Parliament Hill, two free activities occur daily in the summer: ceremony at 10:00 am Change of Guard and evening sound and light show.
In the fall, the Gatineau Hot Air Balloon Festival colors the skies, while the Festival Harvesting Vendemmia tempt the palates of visitors. The International Animation Festival Ottawa features artists from around the world, while the Ottawa International Writers Festival provides a forum for discussion of living authors. Fall Rhapsody celebrates the splendid fall colors.

6. What about restaurants and entertainment / nightlife areas in Ottawa?
Several districts offer entertainment options in Ottawa. The ByWard Market is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Ottawa and also functions as its entertainment district, with over 100 options food and beverages in an area just four blocks from the plaza. Whether in restaurants, a good restaurant, a cozy bistro or a romantic cafe, you can find it "the market."
Elgin Street is another area popular nightlife, with an eclectic selection of bars, restaurants and cafes in only a few blocks. Bank Street offers three or four different areas along its length, including a popular area known as the soil. At the west end, close, Westboro also is an attractive option for dinner and drinks.
Of course, you can also opt to explore the various options in the Casino du Lac-Leamy - whether it's entertainment entertainment or a show at the popular theater or a dinner in his five-diamond restaurant Le Baccara. The region of another establishment of five diamonds (two of only 11 in Canada) is Signatures at Le Cordon Bleu Ottawa.
7. Please give us an overview of the performing arts offered in Ottawa.
The National Arts Centre is Canada's leading center performing arts, offering English and French theater performances, dance, and the Orchestra of the National Arts Centre. Numerous smaller theaters also abound in both English and French, including the Great Canadian Theatre Company, La Nouvelle Scene, Ottawa Little Theatre, Third Wall Theatre Company, Odyssey Theatre (featuring outdoor performances along the Rideau River), a company of madmen, and many productions Arts Court, a municipal facility.
From May 18 to June 11, the Cirque du Soleil will bring its production of Quidam to Ottawa. Dance Festival of Spain is held every two years (June 2-10, 2006) in Ottawa and the Ottawa Fringe Festival (also in June) is one of the best ways to see new productions and new innovations. In
Centrepointe Theatre in the west end offers a variety of actions, like the University of Ottawa and Carleton University.
Larger events are usually held at Scotiabank Place and the Ottawa Civic Centre.
8. What are some of the shopping opportunities in Ottawa?
Some shopping centers exist in Ottawa, including Bayshore Shopping Center at the west end, downtown Rideau Centre, St. Laurent Centre, in the end is near, and the Plaza d'Orleans mall in the east end. These centers offer the best of well-known marks.
For more eclectic offerings, the district ByWard Market offers great fashion and home, like the Glebe, Westboro, and some small towns in both the Ontario and Quebec side of Ottawa River - inclouding Merrickville, Manotick, Perth, Chelsea and Wakefield.
9. What are the outdoor recreation and sports activities around Ottawa?
From a Professionally, the Ottawa Senators are especially beloved by Ottawans, as up to a Stanley Cup victory! The Ottawa '67s offer a window into the Hockey League Ontario. The Ottawa Renegades provide Canadian Football League, while the enthusiasm of Ottawa Lynx baseball are part of the International League (Triple-A team are the farm for the Baltimore Orioles).
But sports in Ottawa are much more participatory than that. The home of hundreds of miles of recreational pathways, Ottawans love cycling, inline skating and hiking. The Ottawa River offers incredible whitewater rafting and canoeing and kayaking adventures for the adventurous.
The highest bungee freefall in Canada is just north of Ottawa, just outside Gatineau Park. Throughout the year, Gatineau Park offers something for outdoor enthusiasts. Whether camping, boating, skiing kayaking, hiking, mountain biking or swimming in summer, or snowshoeing or skiing in winter, Park is beloved by all in the region.
As evidence of the diverse Ottawa is a destination, is the only place where you can skate rink largest the world and play in the biggest tournament in the world of beach volleyball?
10. What type of accommodation is in Ottawa?

11. What are some of the big events and big news stories coming in 2006 and in Ottawa?
The Canadian Museum of Civilization celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2006. Began in May 1856 as part of the Geological Survey of Canada. Young Museum became the National Museum of Canada and then at the National Museum of Man. In the third Indiana Jones film, the climactic scene took place in a spectacular desert location carved into the side of a cliff. This place is part of Petra, located in Jordan, and the April 7, 2006 until January 2, 2007, you can get more information the Canadian Museum of Civilization exhibition PETRA: City of Stone.
The Seven Years War is the focus of a new exhibit at the Canadian Museum War, Ottawa new cultural attraction, which opened with much fanfare in May 2005. The Clash exhibit of Empires: The war that stretches from Canada made in May 18 to November 12.
Outdoor activities are a crucial part of the life of Ottawans. This summer, residents will enjoy the achievements of others, too, as Ottawa hosts over 3,500 athletes and coaches during the 2006 Summer Games in Ontario, from 9 to August 13, 2006.
Quebec Scene: April / May 2007: The National Arts Centre has hosted two previous "scenes" Atlantic Scene in 2003 and Alberta Scene in 2005, and in 2007, Québec Time to shine, as his best theater, music, dance, comedy, culinary arts, literature and film form the basis of this cultural festival.

Rideau Canal as a UNESCO World Heritage Site: The heritage of the Rideau Canal, which stretches 202 km from Ottawa to Kingston, is Canada's entry to be named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The appointment must be received in time for the 175th anniversary of the completion of the Canal in 2007.
Portrait Gallery Canada: Following the opening last spring of the new Canadian War Museum, the next most important cultural institution is planned for Ottawa Portrait Gallery of Canada, which begins across the street from Parliament Hill in late 2007.
