Cerebral Palsy and the road to independence
Tim Smith, deputy director of Treloar College, Alton, Hampshire tells the story of a student's life cerebral palsy and the struggle to become more independent.
Nineteen years old, Justin is about to leave full time education, have studied in school and then Treloar Treloar College for the past five years.
Justin has spastic quadriplegia, a form of cerebral palsy in all four limbs are affected. Justin is in a wheelchair and need help with various daily activities such as bathing. During his time in Treloar, he has been receiving specialized care residences, however, through much hard work with their therapists, is now able to move towards independent living.
Justin key worker, Sue, joined him at least once a week to discuss short-term objectives and long term that may work. All these objectives are focus on achieving independence.
Physiotherapy is an area of the base of treatment for cerebral palsy, and one of the main aims of Justin Dee with the physiotherapist has been to prevent or limit the contractures and limb deformities that can occur with your form of cerebral palsy. It was a team effort, and Dee believes that Justin is now able to carry out a large number of independent movements. Now you can feed it, being moved out of his wheelchair and walk a short Kaye distance using a walker.
Justin also works regularly with Maggie, an occupational therapist. In his first year at Treloar College, learned skills, such as access and the creation of a team, the production of their work independently, and the management of his wheelchair on the road. In its second year, their skills have been expanded to include skills such as withdrawing money from an ATM, travel reservations, shopping and using appliances. With other students has learned how to plan one week menu, make your own clothes and cook basic meals. These life skills have helped Justin to gain confidence and be more independent.
Justin has a slight stammer, which is not necessarily a consequence of cerebral palsy, and has some difficulty in maintaining the tone and the volume of your voice. He worked regularly with speech and language therapist, Caroline, during his first year in college. This allowed him to develop techniques for the management of their speech difficulties independently. As there is some speech sounds that can not hear, heard Justin aid. However, it has given all information you need to make an informed decision on their use and make their own decisions on when and where you feel comfortable with them.
Last year, Justin conducted a seven-month work experience placement in your local supermarket. He worked for five hours once a week in customer service desk and in the box. Justin acknowledged that it was not as fast as their colleagues and sometimes had to ask people to repeat what he was saying. He took the feedback we received constructively, but realized that this was not the role he wanted in a full-time. When he was seven years he wrote his first play, and has ambitions becoming a writer for children.
Justin's next challenge is to make her London home suited to your needs. He is nervous about leaving college, as he knows that life in the rest of the world will be a challenge and I really will miss all the friends he has made. When asked if he felt he had benefited from being in a school and college specifically for young people with physical disabilities, Justin was very frank:
"Treloar helped me to grow. It helped me to be an adult and more independent. As for my disability, CP, Treloar has helped me be more positive and speech therapy and language has helped me get rid of my stuttering. "
So what would Justin say to other young people with cerebral palsy? "Do not be negative because it can do whatever you want to do always have the mind and determination to succeed. Be positive and be a winner. "
