Starting a business? Do you really have the entrepreneurial spirit?
In my line of work - from the people up in business - one of the questions more common than I am asked is "Do you think you have what it takes to start a business?"
As generally believe everyone has what it takes to start a business, usually "yes" before adding "But it's not what I think is. The question is whether you think you have what it takes to start a business? "
Interestingly, the answers often a comparison with a business legend:
"Well, I'm not Richard Branson."
"The guys were when they started Google Uni. I have no such luxury."
Other responses involve a comparison between the person who plans to start a business and an idea of what the "typical" entrepreneur seems.
"I do not have much money as the rich kids. I can not really let my new employer does not."
"You should not take risk, such as small guns. I am married and have children to support. "
So what does a entreprenur like?
If these characterizations of employers actually correct? And how do you know if you have the same qualities or pedigree to start a business?
Recently published statistics by the highly respected Kauffman Foundation on the anatomy of business * help to shed some light on the subject. The results, with based on demonstrating that people who start a business:
- Tend to be middle-aged, with an average age of 40
- Very well educated
- About 71% come from middle class, with less than 1% from very rich or very poor record
- Predominantly married with children, and
- Approximately 50% were interested in starting a business from an early age (although it should be noted, 37% do not even think about it until we decide to start up).
In essence, the creators of companies look like 'the average Joe. "
Reasons for starting a business
- About 75% have a desire to create wealth
- 64% have a desire of owning your own business
- 66% said that the culture of a start up business is important, and
- 60% said they work for others not interested
Interestingly, almost half of respondents started their first business after having passed first 10 years or more as an employee working for someone else.
All of which suggests that the Google Guys are a statistical rarity. Probably almost as rare 95 about a year old with no experience (and not the family for that matter) to start a business!
Will be very different Australian statistics? Probably not much. In my experience, most people who decide to start a business are very normal people doing an amazing thing, using their skills and life experiences with an investment in the future and take control of their destiny.
So, instead of the Google gurus, it may be wiser to look for inspiration at local. From the neighborhood butcher, electrician, architect, builder, milk bar, shop online, clothing store, barber pets, hairdresser, car company limousines, recruiting firm, real estate agent or the thousands of other businesses around you and participate in daily life.
Each and every one is an entrepreneur in action. Look to them for inspiration and learning, and then I'm sure it will be better equipped answer the question "Do I have what need? "
