User Guide for Mac Mini

Getting Started Unpacking

Its box contains

• Mac mini
• power adapter
• power cord
• an Apple Remote
• a DVI to VGA adapter

Basic features

In the front of the Mac mini is an optical slot unit load. The built-in infrared (IR) is to the right of the slot, and the power light is on the lower right corner.

At the bottom of the Mac mini, which has two rows of features. Along the top row, from left to right are

• the power button
• a security slot for a cable and padlock
• audio in / optical digital audio in port
• a headphone jack / optical digital audio output port

Along the bottom row, from left to right are

• a power port
• Ethernet port (10/100/1000 Base-T)
• one FireWire 400 port
• a Puerto DVI video output
• four USB 2.0 ports

AirPort Extreme wireless technology Bluetooth ® wireless technology is within your Mac mini.

Power Adapter

Throw away the plastic film on your Mac mini and power adapter. Place the Mac mini on a firm surface on your back or side and near a power outlet. Your monitor, keyboard and mouse should also be close at hand.

• Connect the power cord to the power adapter
• Put the plug on the end to cause the power adapter into the power port Mac mini
• Connect the power cord to the mains

Please NOTE: Never put anything in your Mac mini. Objects on your Mac mini can disturb the optical drive, AirPort Extreme wireless signal, Bluetooth ® wireless signal.

Peripheral set-up

Your Mac mini is BYODKM - bring your own display, keyboard and mouse. Use your existing (almost any appropriate).

Keyboard and mouse

Connect the keyboard to a USB port on the back of the Mac mini. Plug the mouse into a USB port on the keyboard or the Mac mini.

Windows-based keyboards not have specific characteristics and Mac OS X Command and Option keys. The Windows logo key, however, is equivalent to the key Mac OS X Command, and the Alt key is equivalent to Mac OS X key Option.

To modify the keyboard

• click Apple> System Preferences
• Keyboard & Mouse Click
• choose keys modifier
• follow the instructions on the screen

By Please note: When using a USB keyboard and mouse made by a company other than Apple, you may need software drivers. If you have not have these, visit the manufacturer website and download them.

Apple Wireless Keyboard and Mighty Mouse

If you have an Apple Wireless Keyboard and wireless Mighty Mouse, follow the setup procedures contained in the appropriate manuals.

Monitor

Using video from your Mac mini DVI port for connecting a monitor. If you have a VGA monitor, connect to the Mac mini cable with DVI to VGA adapter.

Please note; Mac mini supports digital resolutions up to 1920 x 1200 pixels. This means you can connect a 20-inch Apple Cinema Display 23 "or Apple Cinema HD Display.

Internet or network

Connect your Mac mini to the Internet or a wireless network or via a cable.

• Wireless. Your Mac mini includes AirPort Extreme wireless technology. For more details, go to the menu bar, choose Help> Mac Help, and click Library> AirPort Help.
• Cable. Simply plug one end of an Ethernet cable to the Mac mini, and the other to a cable modem, DSL modem or a network.

Switching the button Power

To start the Mac mini, press the power button located on the back.

Provision Assistant

The first time you use your Mac mini, the Setup Assistant appears. This lets you set your

• user account
• Internet access
• Email details

If you already have a Mac computer , you can use Setup Assistant to transfer software and files to your Mac mini.

If you prefer to wait before the transfer of information, use the Migration Assistant at a later date.

• Select the Applications folder
• Open Utilities
• Double-click Wizard Migration

Personalize

A design change desktop - the first screen that appears when you have finished with the Setup Assistant - go to the menu bar and select Apple> System Preferences. For more details on what you can do to customize your Mac mini, choose Help and search for "System Preferences."

Mode suspension and closure of Sleep mode

If you are going to be away from your Mac mini for only a short time you can put it on standby instead of shutdown. Simply choose one of the following:

• hold down the Apple Remote Play / Pause button for three seconds
• Choose Apple> System Preferences, choose Energy Saver, set the timer
• press the power button
• choose Apple> Sleep in the menu bar

When you are ready to activate the Mac mini, press any of the Apple Remote buttons or any key on your keyboard.

Close

Close down your Mac mini, choose Apple> Shut Down. To activate it again, press the power button.

Attention: do not move the Mac mini before you've turned off. It can damage the hard disk if you move the computer while the disc is spinning.

Basic OS X operating system guide

Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard operating system is Mac mini. Run your files, software and peripheral devices, and is similar in principle to Windows.

Controls

Its controls are the mouse, Keyboard and Apple Remote. If you're more accustomed to Windows, soon discover that the Mac OS X is easier to navigate and faster.

Main features

Navigating screens Mac mini is easy. There are self explanatory windows, menus and shortcuts, plus the following features:

• Spring

• Menu bar

Desk

Desktop is the screen where you normally start each time you turn the Mac mini. The display shows your HD (hard disk) in the icons. Select an icon to view HD files and applications inside. When connecting a peripheral device on your Mac mini, the corresponding icon on the desktop.

Points to note:

• Use folders to store desktop images, files and other documents
• Mac OS X gives each user a separate desktop Mac mini
• Desktop behind any of the applications you run

Spring

The icons at the bottom of the screen is the Dock. Use the icons to access commonly used applications, folders, files and windows.

When a window appears, note that has three colored buttons in the upper left corner.

• Red close window
• Yellow minimizes the window to the Dock
• Green maximizes and minimizes window size

Seeker

The icon in the Dock left end is the Finder. You can use the Finder to manage your folders, drives and applications.

Menu Bar

Mac OS X has a single menu bar. Appears on the screen as a line on the top.

Use the menu bar to

• work with a program
• view and change the configuration and software
• software closing
• check his recent work
• access
• Log Out
• put the Mac mini in sleep mode
• restart the Mac mini
• disconnect

The menu bar changes to give the most appropriate options for the software you are running.

Connectivity

The FireWire 400 is ideal for connecting devices high speed. These include digital video cameras and hard drives.

The four USB 2.0 ports for devices such as keyboard, mouse, iPod, printer, camera, games and controller.
