Satellite tv fashion shows Have Multiple Impacts
There are many ways to call something fashionable. Trendy. Edgy. Modern. Fashion-forward. In style. In vogue. En vogue. Stylish. Chic. Trendsetting. Classy. All the rage. Cool. Hot. Happening. Tony. Elegant. Sophisticated. Daft. Snazzy. Modish. Hip. All the rage. Fierce.
This last word – fierce – truly came into the modern parlance via Christian Siriano, the winner of Season 4 of then runaway Bravo network smash, Project Runway (the show has since moved to Lifetime Television, a women's interest channel). Now, it is used just about everywhere – by middle-aged women trying to get their groove back with a new outfit to teenage kids in a shopping mall to other aspiring fashion designers around the world. This shows the power of how fashion shows that broadcast across the country and around the world via satellite TV can have such an impact on the regular world. While the word "fierce" was perhaps one used by a certain segment of the population – say, flamboyantly gay men who had an interest in fashion design and style – now it is used by middle Americans. This is because millions of them watch shows like Project Runway on their brand new high definition televisions, allowing them to share in a part of American culture that they never would have had access to without the universalizing power of satellite TV. These are people who have a minimal interest in fashion – they likely do their regular clothes shopping once or twice a year in a major suburban shopping complex, barreling through department stores and selecting outfits straight off of the mannequins. But they watch fashion television shows for the entertainment quality, for the enjoyment of seeing creative competition in a reality show setting, and then all of the sudden they are absorbing completely different elements of the programming.
Another example of this is America's Next Top Model. This Tyra Banks vehicle just began its (dizzying) 15th season in September 2010, averaging about two "cycles" a year since its 2003 debut. The show puts a group of young women through different competitions and photo shoots, eliminating one contestant every week and whittling it down to a final champion model, who gains a contract with CoverGirl Cosmetics, an editorial shoot in Elle Magazine, and a contract at a top modeling agency. Though only a few of the winning models have gone on to have any kind of seriously successful careers in modeling, the show seems to thrive more on the season-to-season dramas than the actual modeling ambitions of the contestants. If you have a high definition television, some of the photo shoots are pretty cool to look at, too! But getting back to the original point – this show is able to enter the national consciousness by Tyra's purposeful manipulation of potentially controversial social issues in order to raise the profile of the show. This is not meant in a critical way – in fact, Tyra brings a number of serious issues to the forefront, showcasing them on the show and starting a national dialogue of sorts, exposing her (most likely) suburban teenage viewers to ideas that they have not come across, like mental disabilities, transexuality, and race/class issues. Pretty heavy for a fashion reality show on satellite TV!
